East Hampshire District Council's Cabinet has recommended a raise in council tax of 2.9 per cent - the first since April 2006.

The increase represents the best way to achieve a balanced budget and provide a strong base for future financial planning.

If accepted by the full council at its next meeting, on Wednesday 24 February, the current Band D charge will increase by £3.70 a year, to £131.37.

For several years EHDC kept council tax increases in line with inflation. For the last three years council tax has been frozen at the level set in April 2006.

EHDC Leader Cllr David Parkinson said: "The global recession has brought about increased pressure on public services with government money restricted, income affected and investments weakened by low interest rates.

"This budget balances the need to make savings with the need to prepare for the tough times ahead while still maintaining our traditional quality of service."

Cllr Ken Moon, said: "This has been a difficult budget process given the economic conditions but I am delighted we have reached a position which is good for the council and good for the residents of East Hampshire.

"Nearly £700,000 has been made in savings across the council this year and this has been combined with a continuous improvement in service standards."

2.9% Increase? Private sector companies are freezing salaries or reducing salaries or laying people off and yet EHDC is proposing and increase. This does not make sense in the current economic climate. What should be being proposed is a freeze or a reduction in services/employees. Now is the time to be prudent

Sorry - I don't understand how you can say this is the first increase since 2006 when my council tax bill has increased each year. Am I misreading something? Mrs S Bradford

2.9% for EHDC eliment alone that is, not the police and county and fire service. With central government wanting to cut services over the next 5 years I would not be surpised to see this going up year on year. Like partners announcement lately they will make savings off that im sure EHDC could cut more costs or maybe look at downsizing. Peoples pay has gone down or stayed the same, inflation is climbing. Torys in power at all levels should they not be looking at more effecentcy or call an election and let people here there ideas and the councilers explain themselves more rather than doing voting behind closed doors and giving themselves a bonus at the same time.
