The hard work and dedication behind the Petersfield Christmas Festival has been recognised with a community award.

The festival, organised by East Hampshire District Council, attracted thousands of visitors to the town with a mix of quality stalls, stage acts, family activities and Christmas events.

On Friday 3 April the three-day event was named Event of the Year at the Life in Petersfield Community Awards, held in Petersfield Festival Hall.

The organising team, who were supported by a small army of volunteers, were also Highly Commended in the Professional Community Support category of the annual awards.

Councillor Richard Millard, who instigated the festival, said: "This award speaks volumes about the organisation and energy of those people who pulled it together.

"The festival was an enormous success, attracting shoppers to Petersfield and giving local families a wonderful experience in a magical atmosphere.

"We have received piles of positive feedback about the event, from residents, businesses and visitors to the town and this award emphasises the overwhelming support it has drawn.

"Let's use this as a foundation on which to build future award-winning festivals."

The Petersfield Christmas Festival pipped another East Hampshire event, Butserfest, to the winning post in the Event of the Year category. Butserfest, September's out-door rock festival for youngsters, was Highly Commended.
