Turbine proposal for East Meon

Monday 11th of May 2009

Comments Have your say

Plans to build two 126m wind turbines near East Meon are being drawn up by a German power company.

Manufacturers Volkswind hope to place the turbines on Wether Down near the Sustainability Centre, part of the current Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within the boundary for the forthcoming South Downs National Park.

A planning application is expected to be submitted to East Hampshire District Council during the summer.

Before East Hampshire District Council will consider the application it has required an Environmental Impact Assessment to be drawn up by the company.

Each turbine will have a rated power supply of 2.5 MW (megawatts) with hub heights of 80m and rotor diameters of 90m, achieving a maximum overall height of 126.5m.

Volkswind say the wind farm would generate 17,000 MWh (megawatt hours) of energy every year for the next 25 years - enough to power around 3,700 households.

Volkswind is also encouraging local residents to comment on the proposal through its website.

I fully support this proposed windfarm. Along with the County's energy from waste facilities and landfill gas installations this windfarm will be a great addition to Hampshire's renewable energy generation capacity. I urge the council to resist the siren voices of the NIMBYs and grant permission for this modest scale develoment. For sure the protest groups will dust-off the anti-wind protest bible and start letter writing but the issues have been proven time and again across the country to be invalid. Come on Hampshire embrace wind energy.
